Obon (お盆) or Bon (盆) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to respect deceased spirits of your own ancestors. During the Obon holiday, people return to ancestral family places and visit to pray and clean their graves. We set up a field fire to welcome those spirits in the evening of August 13 and we do the same to farewell spirits who are returning to the world of the dead on August 16. We also set up the household altars where returning spirits can revisit and rest during Obon.
