Guinness: World Shortest Man

A Colombian man standing at 2 feet and 3.46 inches has been officially certified as the world's shortest man, Guinness World Records announced. Edward Hernandez of Bogota will appear in the 2011 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, which is due to be released Sept. 15, taking over from the recently deceased He Pingping of China, Guinness said.

Edward Nino Hernandez from Bosa in Colombia has just entered the Guinness World Records as the shortest man in the world, a record previously held by Pingping of China (who died in March).
24-year-old Nino stands just 27 inches (70cm) high and stopped growing when he was two years old. Colombian doctors were unable to explain why he is so small.

Nino seems unworried about his height and said "I feel happy because I'm unique," Although he added that he dislikes it when people keep touching him all the time and picking him up.

According to the new record holder he has an 18-year-old girlfriend called Fanny. Whilst her exact height is unknown, we are told she is less than 5 feet tall.

Unfortunately, Nino suffers with cataracts in both eyes and needs surgery to correct this problem. However, with his new found fame, a part in a film and the cash he earns dancing at department stores, he may soon be able to afford this.

Worlds shortest man

The only cloud on the horizon might be a teenager from Nepal called Khagendra Thapa Magar, who is nearly 18-years-old and currently 5 inches smaller than Nino!

If Magar maintains his height, he could enter the records as being the shortest (verified) man ever, which is currently held by a man called Gul Mohammed, who was born in India in 1957. Gul Mohammed died at the age of 40 from respiratory complications and after a long struggle with asthma and bronchitis

                                                       JAPANESE CULTURE FACTS

Japan, also referred to as Nippon, is an island nation situated in the Pacific Ocean in eastern Asia. The archipelago consists of approximately 6800 big and small islands, prominent ones being Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. One of the major economic powers of the world today, Japan has come a long way after experiencing one of the worst human induced disasters, in form of the atomic bomb. All this while, however, the island nation didn't quite compromise in terms of cultural heritage, which is still rich and well rooted. Here are some of the popular Japanese culture facts which are bound to surprise you.

Japanese Culture: Festivals
It is said, that at any given point of time, at least one festival is being celebrated in some or the other part of Japan. Some of the most popular festivals of Japan include Aomori Nebuta Festival, held in August, and Doll Festival and Sakura Festival, both of which are held in March. The Sakura festival is the Japanese way of celebrating the blossoming of cherry plants. February is like the festive month for Japan with numerous festivals lined up to celebrate winter. Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival, Lake Towada Snow Festival and Sapporo Snow Festival, all of which are held in February are some of the famous and more popular Japanese festivals. Read more on new year and Christmas in Japan.

Japanese Culture: Food
Japanese cuisine is no doubt one of the most prominent aspect of the Japanese culture and facts. Over a period of time, Japanese cuisine has experienced a remarkable growth, spanning various parts of the world, including the European and American nations. Mouth-watering sushi, teriyaki and tempura are some of the most popular dishes native to Japan. Japanese cuisine emphasizes on the concept of seasonality of food, wherein some special dishes are prepared at a particular time of the year. Read more on Japanese food.

Japanese Culture: Clothing
The first thing that comes to our mind when we think about Japanese clothing is the people wearing traditional full length flowing robes, referred to as kimonos. This traditional wear has some of the most unusual Japanese culture facts associated with it. For instance, a kimono worn by a married lady, i.e. tomesode, differs from a kimono worn by a unmarried girl, furisode. Another common piece of clothing used extensively in Japan is happi, a straight sleeved coat normally imprinted with the family crest.

Interesting Facts About Japan
Japanese culture also includes some pretty unusual facts, like in Japanese language the same word is used for 'rice' and 'food', or Japanese eat with chopsticks known as hashi. Here are some more interesting facts about Japan and its culture.
  • Japanese tend to have rice for their breakfast, lunch, as well as dinner.
  • An ancient Japanese art of paper folding, origami has become a popular component of art and crafts across the world.
  • Yet another gift from Japan to the world is the Manga, a non-animated cartoon series which traces its origin to Japan.
These were some of the lesser known Japanese culture facts meant to throw some light on the fascinating culture of the land of the rising sun. Even though the population of the island nation is very less, the values followed by Japanese people are strong pillars of the rich Japanese culture. Family life is yet another important cultural attribute of this culture. Although family roles may have changed, the roots of a traditional Japanese family still prevail. In fact, a Japanese saying, translated as, 'Even if a family doesn't live together, the parents and grandparents should live close enough to carry over a bowl of hot soup from one house to another' speaks in volumes for the cultural values inculcated in people in Japan.

`YOU ARE AT A GOOD COST`

Haiku
Haiku (俳句 haikai verse?) , plural haiku, is a very short form of Japanese poetry typically characterised by three qualities:
  • The essence of haiku is "cutting" (kiru). This is often represented by the juxtaposition of two images or ideas and a kireji ("cutting word") between them, a kind of verbal punctuation mark which signals the moment of separation and colours the manner in which the juxtaposed elements are related.
  • Traditional haiku consist of 17 on (also known as morae), in three phrases of 5, 7 and 5 on respectively. Any one of the three phrases may end with the kireji. Although haiku are often stated to have 17 syllables, this is incorrect as syllables and on are not the same.
  • kigo (seasonal reference), usually drawn from a saijiki, an extensive but defined list of such words. The majority of kigo, but not all, are drawn from the natural world. This, combined with the origins of haiku in pre-industrial Japan, has led to the inaccurate impression that haiku are necessarily nature poems.
Modern Japanese gendai (現代) haiku are increasingly unlikely to follow the tradition of 17 on or to take nature as their subject, but the use of juxtaposition continues to be honoured in both traditional haiku and gendai. There is a common, although relatively recent, perception that the images juxtaposed must be directly observed everyday objects or occurrences.
In Japanese, haiku are traditionally printed in a single vertical line while haiku in English often appear in three lines to parallel the three phrases of Japanese haiku.
Previously called hokku, haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of the 19th century.
