Japanese Eyes

Forget the Beholder. Beauty is in the eyes of anyone

with a steady gaze.

At least that’s what the June 11 issue of Advertising Age concluded about Japanese women. According to research, gone are the days of meek femininity when a timid look away was a well-timed tactic in attracting an eligible suitor. These days, it’s about big and boldly penetrating eyes.

In one of their studies they looked at popular women’s magazines from 2003 to 2005. Models looked demure in 2003 ― blushing downward or looking off to the side ― though just two years later a majority of the women’s eyes were fixed in the direction of the reader, as if to seduce them. Changes like this are telling of Japan’s current trend of “bringing sexy back,” to quote Justin Timberlake. Critics attribute J-Pop singer Koda Kumi for setting the bar on sex appeal, with her sensual voice and voluptuous curves ― though the eyes have a lot to do with it as well.

Being a silent observer (and occasional participant) of Japanese cosmetic culture, I’ve noticed young women go all out with their eye makeup. The trick is to curl the lashes, then cake on the mascara, then curl and cake again until they nearly touch the sky. Of course there are the adhesive fakes, but why bother when the latest new mascaras can extend lashes three times its volume and length? Some even come with glitter.

Now with new technology, girls are also enhancing their boring old eyes with something new and exciting. Johnson & Johnson’s Acuvue Define contact lenses are not only colored they’re embedded with a black or brown circle or “limbal ring,” making the iris appear nearly a third bigger. Girls who wear them get a sort of baby-doll look. Think Harajuku Girls on a double shot of espresso.

And then there’s the slightly controversial way to enhance the eyes by creating a permanent crease on the eyelid. It’s a product called “Eye-puchi” and is sold at your local beauty supply shop or drug store. Some people consider it as wrong as plastic surgery, but girls who end up trying it simply want to create a strong impact on whoever they meet. After all, your eyes are supposed to be the portal to your soul. So why let the other girls have all the fun?

Although Bentō is readily available in many places throughout Japan, including convenience stores, Bentō shops, train stations, and department stores, it is still common for Japanese homemakers to spend considerable time and energy producing an appealing boxed lunch.

In this blog, We to you present you Bentō themed in famous  Anime or Cartoon Movie. They are just so cute that I even don’t want eat them.

Tokyo Leads List of World's Most Expensive Cities

Tokyo again declared the world’s most expensive city

Tokyo took the “dubious” honour of the world’s most expensive city, a title it has held for much of the past two decades, with Osaka ranking third.
“Low inflation and poor consumer confidence have persisted in Japan, but the yen has strengthened significantly over the last two years, pushing Tokyo back to the top of the ranking last year,” the survey said.
“This year the cost of living has increased further in Tokyo, despite the human and economic cost of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Tokyo in March and the subsequent nuclear reactor scare in Fukushima.”
On the other hand, the soaring Australian dollar has turned the country’s four biggest cities into some of the most expensive locations in the world, according to a new global survey.
Sydney and Melbourne are now the sixth and seventh most expensive cities on the planet, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s biennial cost of living survey revealed.
More significantly Perth and Brisbane, major regional centres closest to the country’s booming coal and iron ore mines, rose to 13 and 14 respectively.
“Ten years ago Sydney was ranked 71st and Melbourne 80th, while Perth was ranked 91st and Brisbane was 93rd,” the survey said.
“This is the culmination of a remarkable rise in the cost of living in Australian cities over the last decade, a period in which the value of the Australian dollar has moved from around 50 US cents to passing parity with the US dollar earlier this year.”
Insatiable demand in Asia for raw materials to make steel has seen commodity prices return to highs from before the 2008 global financial crisis. It is now cheaper to live in London, Vienna, Rome, Berlin, Hong Kong and Beijing than most Australian cities.
Despite ongoing debt fears and weakness in the eurozone, the survey said the top 10 has “a familiar European flavour” and includes Oslo, Paris, Geneva, Zurich and Frankfurt.
Most of 10 cheapest cities were in South Asia with the Pakistani port of Karachi at the bottom of the index. Mumbai and New Delhi were also in the bottom 10, while the Sri Lankan capital Colombo came in 114th, in the bottom 20.
“Despite the rise of India as a growing emerging-market economy, the low cost of living in cities continues to reflect the fact that the subcontinent remains a comparatively cheap place to live and work,” the survey said.

First Japanese Rider

Beppu also up front with one lap to go

Yukiya Arashiro became the first Japanese rider to make the top ten at the road race world championship by finishing ninth on Moorabool Street in Geelong on Sunday. With one lap to go, his compatriot Fumiyuki Beppu was also helping him out in the front group. This is the birth of a new cycling nation at world level and a great inspiration for the rest of Asia.
“I like circuits like this,” Arashiro commented on the finishing line. “When I watched it, it made me think I could do well. My luck was that when a big breakaway went, many teams have ridden behind and we have just had to follow. In the last climb, I was at the limit but I recovered for the final sprint, and I realised that there was a handful of great sprinters.
“I followed Oscar Freire and Matti Breschel. This is the first time Japan has made the top ten but there’s more to come. I think it’s very encouraging for next year. I’ll try to do better than ninth in the future.”
Beppu (30th) was also delighted with Japan’s showing in Melbourne. Yukihiro Doi was their third man and finished 72nd after playing his part in the team’s success.
“All three of us have done our best and Yukiya and myself were up there at the end”, Beppu said. “We also communicated well. I asked Yukiya how he was. He said he wanted to wait the sprint. He was pretty confident to get a good position. For me the last climb was too difficult, but I gave all I had for Yukiya to be well placed at the end.”
“This isn’t bad for Japanese riders, isn’t it?” Beppu continued. “We have improved a lot in the last five years. This race will give us good publicity all over the world. In the U23 race, the Hong Kong riders have also shown that Asians can ride their bikes pretty well.”
Japanese riders are in a higher demand in European and American teams now. A few hours before the start of the road race, Arashiro heard the news that Europcar would take over the sponsorship of the Bbox Bouygues Telecom team that gave him a start at the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France this year. Just like his team captain Thomas Voeckler, he’ll stay faithful to the team that gave him a chance to turn professional, although he said that he had been approached by one of the world’s biggest teams in recent days.
