DO YOU KNOW WHAT KYUDO IS??

Kyudo (弓道 kyūdō^?, way of the bow) is the modern Japanese martial art (gendai budō) of archery; Kyudo is based on kyūjutsu (art of archery), which originated with the samurai class of feudal Japan.^[1] Kyudo is practised by thousands of people worldwide. As of 2005, the International Kyudo Federation had 132,760 graded members.

  As you can see, the bow of Kyudo is simple unlike archery. So, it's more difficult to hit the target compared to archery. But hitting the target is not the only purpose of playing Kyudo. Kyudo practice as all budō includes the idea of moral and spiritual development.There is a saying ''seisha seichū'' which means correct shooting is correct hitting. So, performing fundamental movements correctly is also considered important. 
 I used to play Kyudo before, and it was really interesting!! You should try Kyudo someday!!

THE MOST FAMOUS GARDEN IN JAPAN!!!

 Japanese Gardens: The original Japanese gardens were inspired by Buddhist and Chinese philosophy and later evolved to have their own distinct Japanese identity. The gardens found in Japanese temples and shrines are inspired by the Shinto religion and the belief in an ideal state of harmony. One of the most famous Zen Rock Gardens in Japan is the Ryoan-ji Zen Rock Garden in Kyoto.     











  Ryoan-ji is one of the most famous temples in Kyoto. I went to see this garden before and there were many tourists in this garden. As you can see, this garden is really simple. But it's famous for its simpleness. Ryoan-ji is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I recommend you to see this garden!!! 

FOUR SEASONS IN JAPAN!!

As you probably know, there are four seasons in Japan. 

 Spring which starts in March and stays till May is a very busy period in Japan. It is also the season when the most beautiful festival Hanami is celebrated. Cherry blossoms at Ueno Park is really beautiful!

 Summer months are June, July, and August. Summer is very hot and humid in Japan. Hanabi displays(fireworks) are held as a way to enjoy the warm summer evenings! 

 Autumn months are September, October, and November. After its humid summer, it is the coolest and the most beautiful season. We can see beautiful fallen leaves in this season!  

  Winter months are December, January, and February. In general, Japan’s winters are relatively mild and dry. It snows in Hokkaido and northern parts of Honshu too. 

 

You can see different aspects of Japan in these four seasons. So, if you come to Japan, the seasons when you come is really important!!

CROWDED SHIBUYA CROSSING!!!

 Do you know what Shibuya Crossing is like? It is the most famous crossing in Japan. You would be surprised if you see people waiting. Why? Because there are tons of people!!!

 「Rumoured to be the world’s busiest, this intersection in front of Shibuya Station is famously known as ‘The Scramble’. It’s an awesome spectacle of giant video screens and neon, guaranteed to give you a 'Wow – I'm in Tokyo!' feeling. People come from all directions at once – sometimes over a thousand with every light change – yet still manage to dodge each other with a practiced, nonchalant agility.」

 As in this article, you can feel like you are actually in Tokyo if you see this Shibuya Crossing.It looks like you would bump into someone during crossing the intersection. But Japanese people can dodge each other because we are used to this situation! Shibuya Crossing is becoming a popular tour spot!!  

WHY DO JAPANESE PEOPLE SLURP?

 You would feel uncomfortable if you hear people slurping when they are eating. But in Japan, this is not different. Some Japanese people slurp on purpose when they are noodles. And other people don't care about it. WHY??   It is said slurping indicates the food is delicious. And the slurping also serves to cool down the hot noodles for eating. So, slurping is not a bad things for most people. But of course, some people don't like slurping sound. Slurping is becoming Japanese culture in a good way and bad way.
 You would think Japanese people are rude if you see people slurping. But it is normal in Japan. So, keep that in mind if you come to Japan.

A GOLDEN TEMPLE IN JAPAN?

 Have you ever seen a temple covered in gold? There is a temple called Kinkakuji which literally means the temple of the Golden Pavilion. This temple is famous among tourists for its color. This temple is literally covered in gold -gold leaf! It's World Heritage listed and surround by beautiful gardens!!

Here's history of Kinkakuji

 In the 1220's it was the comfortable villa of Kintsune Saionji. Yoshimitsu, the 3rd Shogun of Ashikaga, abdicated the throne in 1394. After three years, he began to build Kitayamaden and he made a special effort to make it a breath-taking site. He indulged in his peaceful life in this serene setting. After Yoshimitsu's death, Kitayamaden was made into a Zen temple in accordance with his will. All the buildings of those days came to ruin except Kinkaku. The garden, however, remains as it was in former days and can be enjoyed as it was hundreds of years ago. Kinkaku-ji Temple was inscribed as World Cultural Heritage in 1994.

Kinkakuji is really worth seeing it! You should see this temple if there's a chance you come to Japan!

Japanese fashion includes many traditional forms of clothing including the kimono and its associated accessories.A subculture of girls and young women in urban Japan. They are characterized by conspicuously displaying their disposable incomes through unique tastes in fashion, music, and social activity.

The Kimono is the most famous form of traditional Japanese clothing for women. The Kimono is actually a style with many different forms; from the casual to the wedding style, all which have a particular meaning and are wore to different events or occasions.

Miso(味噌) is Japanese seasoning used to flavour soups and other foods. It is made by mixing steamed soybean, salt and Koji (malted rice). Sometimes other ingredients are used in addition. Miso is one of the traditional Japanese flavors and it's very healthy. Japanese people often eat miso soup in the morning. The most common flavors of miso are Shiromiso "white miso", Akamiso "red miso" and Awasemiso "mixed miso". In Japan, miso ramen is very popular. So, try miso ramen when you visit Japan!!

 WHY DO JAPANESE PEOPLE WEAR SURGICAL MASKS?  Many people would wonder it if you come to Japan. Is it because many Japanese people have serious illness? The answer is NO. Actually, wearing masks is really popular culture in Japan. They wear it when they have a cold because they don't want to spread their cold to others. And also, some people wear a mask even they are totally fine because they don't want to get sick. Especially in spring, you can see many people wearing it because of hey fever. Wearing a mask when you have a cold would be considered polite. So, if you visit Japan, be sure to wear a mask when you are feeling bad because you would look impolite if you don't wear it!!   

WHAT DOES THE WORD "SAMURAI" ACTUALLY MEAN?

"What does the word SAMURAI actually mean?"

Samurai (侍 or sometimes 士) is a common term for a warrior in pre-industrial Japan. A more appropriate term is bushi (武士) (lit. "war-man") which came into use during the Edo period. However, the term samurai now usually refers to warrior nobility, not, for example, ashigaru or foot soldiers. The samurai with no attachment to a clan or daimyo was called a ronin (lit. "wave-man"). 

By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai were usually associated with a clan and their lord, and they followed a set of rules that later came to be known as the bushidō. While the samurai numbered less than 10% of then Japan's population,^[2] their teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in modern Japanese martial arts.

VALENTINE’S DAY & WHITE DAY IN JAPAN

Japanese Valentine’s Day is nothing like others.

In Japan Valentine’s Day is celebrated in a very unique style. It is the women who present gifts to men.


There is a strong tradition of women giving chocolates to men on Valentines Day. There are two types of chocolates, “Giri-choco” (obligation chocolate), and “Honmei-choco”. Giri-choco is meant to be for friends, colleagues, bosses, and close male friends. “Giri” means obligation hence this Giri-choco has no romance involved. On the other hand, Honmei-choco is given to a boyfriend, lover, or husband with true love. Japanese women often prepare the Honmei-choco by themselves as many of them think it is not true love if they just buy the ready made chocolate at shops. You will start seeing large displays of chocolate, often heart-shaped in department stores and grocery stores from mid-January. Days before the Valentine’s Day, stores get packed with a large variety of chocolates, the cooking tools, and women!

Take a look at the Valentine’s Day sections of major Department stores such as Isetan, Marui, or Mitsukoshi, and experience the Valentine’s Day in Japanese style.

What is more unique in Japan is that there exists a “White Day” which takes place on March 14th, exactly one month after Valentine’s Day. On White Day men are supposed to give return gifts to women who gifted them chocolates on Valentine’s Day. More often the color of the chocolate is white because of the name of the day. Flowers, candies and other gifts are also popular along with the chocolates. Again, department stores have many advanced reminders with gift displays so men will have no excuse to forget about this special day which is important for women.
