Red-Bellied Pacu



Maximum Length: 35 inches
Maximum Weight: 55 pounds


All in the Family: The red-bellied pacu is the cousin of a very well-known fish that terrorizes swimmers in made-for-TV movies and on the big screen: the piranha. These family members sure know how to use their sharp teeth to make their prey scream for mercy. The red-bellied pacu, however, have squarer, straighter teeth more like those of humans, and they primarily use them to cut through vegetation growing in the water.


Moving on Up: Red-bellied pacu, which can get as long as 35 inches (88 centimeters) and weigh as much as 55 pounds (25 kilograms), live in Papua New Guinea, but their ancestors didn't originate there. In the 1990s, more than 14,000 pacu fish — as well as several other fish species — were shipped in from Indonesia and were released into lakes in Papua New Guinea's Sepik and Ramu rivers. This initiative was part of the part of the FISHAID project to increase fishery in the region.

Fish Attack: The red-bellied pacu's diet consists mainly of insects, fruits and nuts. Their large choppers are perfect for cracking open rubber tree nuts and crushing seeds. However, the pacu started feeding on other fish in 1999, when their usual food sources became scarce. The locals in Papua New Guinea even blame these river monsters for destroying the tilapia fish population. The pacu have been known to attack humans, too. In 2001, two fishermen in two separate incidents reportedly bled to death after their genitals had been bitten off by pacu fish.

Ryu's Movie Review - Sweet November

So much for the action and adventure movies. Lets take a look at some of the best romantic movies of all time. One of them is "Sweet November" (Kei Oomori's favorite movie).
 This romantic melodrama reunites The Devil's Advocate (1997) co-stars Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron, and is directed by Irish filmmaker Pat O'Connor (Circle of Friends). Sara Deever (Theron) is a beautiful young woman who begins a new romantic relationship with a man each month, then helps him to evolve into a better and kinder human being before she moves on to the next partner. Although she's remained friendly with some of her former lovers, she's never broken her one-month rule. November's candidate is a particularly heartless business exec named Nelson Moss (Reeves), who takes a while to come around. Once he does, however, Nelson falls deeply in love, hoping to woo Sara for good; eventually, her resolve weakens. What Nelson doesn't know is the tragic secret behind the brevity of Sara's romances. A remake of a 1968 Sandy Dennis film by the same name, this contemporary version of Sweet November is less comedic and emphasizes more of its story's tearjerker qualities than the original.

Love-love Umbrella



The ubiquitous heart with arrow is the universal symbol of love, you find them on all kind of places from trees to classroom desks – a good application for that compass in the math set. Thankfully, SMS and IM has made professing love more environment friendly.
Today I learnt the Japanese equivalent. It is called “Ai ai gasa” (ã�‚ã�„ã�‚ã�„傘). Literally it means “Love-love umbrella” and it symbolises two people who like each other enough to share an umbrella.

SHOPPING IN JAPAN

Shopping is a fun thing to do while traveling. You can easily find both traditional items and the latest goods in Tokyo. There are many places you can shop inexpensively, such as 100yen shops and discount shops in the city.
Most stores are open weekends and holidays except some specialty stores. In Japan, you need to pay 5% consumption tax in addition to the price (as of July 2011). Japanese department stores are fun places to shop. They carry many kinds of traditional Japanese goods as well as the latest fashions. Food floors in department stores are called "depachika" and are filled with world gourmet food and Japanese regional specialties. If you want to buy trendy apparels, try to catch a bargain during the sales season. Typical store sales are held biannually from late June through July and from late December through mid January.
