1,000-year-old cherry tree gives hope to Japan nuclear victims

Tens of thousands of Japanese have made a pilgrimage to a 1,000-year old cherry tree that has blossomed just 30 miles from the site of last month’s nuclear disaster.

The tree in full bloom has become a symbol of hope in Japan. Adding to the significance of the occasion is that the tree is one of the oldest in a country that cherishes cherry blossoms as symbol of springtime renewal and a fresh start.

The Miharu-Takizakura cherry tree, a national treasure located in Miharu, Fukushima, is one of only three of its kind in the country, dating back more than 1,000 years.

It survived the devastation caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami which hit the prefecture, with Miharu town suffering collapsed houses and cracked roadways.

This week, in a demonstration of resilience, the historic tree hit the peak of its springtime blooming, attracting an estimated 60,000 visitors to appreciate its pink flowers.

Thousands of visitors have streamed around the tree despite the tourist office’s cancellation of special cherry tree viewing bus services and the absence of illumination.

    The Toyota Corolla is one of a line of subcompact and compact cars manufactured by the  Japanese automaker Toyota, which has become very popular throughout the world since the nameplate was first introduced in 1966. In 1997, the Corolla became the best selling nameplate in the world,Over 39 million Corollas have been sold as of 2012. 


The series has undergone several major redesigns.The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using the name Crown for primary models: the Corona, for example, gets its name from the Latin for crown; Corolla is Latin for small crown; and Camry is an Anglicized pronunciation of the Japanese for crown, kanmuri.Corollas are manufactured in Japan and in Brazil (Indaiatuba, São Paulo), Canada (Cambridge, Ontario), China (Tianjin), India(Bangalore), Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, South Africa (Durban), Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and Venezuela. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes. Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, later models were mostly front-wheel drive and some models were four-wheel drive. Its traditional competitor almost from the very beginning has been the Nissan Sunny also introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan.

• Performance

  Hilux buyers can choose between 101bhp or 118bhp 2.5-litre turbodiesels and a 168bhp 3.0-litre diesel. The entry-level model is best avoided, because it struggles to keep up with the ebb and flow of traffic, even when the loadbed is empty. The higher-powered 2.5 is a much stronger option. In fact, it makes the flagship 3.0-litre engine feel redundant.

• Ride & Handling

  Firm suspension gives the Hilux decent body control when tackling corners or undulating roads and the steering is reassuringly weighty. Unfortunately, the trade-off for its composure is ride comfort. Around town in particular, the Toyota tends to thump over potholes, shaking occupants in their seats. There's a shortage of rear-end grip when the loadbay is empty, too. 
  

• Refinement

  All three Hilux engines are noisy, whether you're trundling around town or cruising on the motorway, but the smallest engine is worst because it needs to be worked hard to make up for the dearth of power. Big door mirrors cause plenty of wind noise at the national limit, but occupants are well isolated from road noise.

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO 

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a, mid-size four-wheel drive vehicle in the Toyota Land Cruiser range produced by the Japanese car maker Toyota Motor Corporation. The Prado is one of the smaller vehicles in the range.

In Europe it is sold as simply the Toyota Land Cruiser LC3, LC4 or LC5 (depending on the generation) or with the number series designation (LC 70, LC 90 and LC 120). In North America it is not part of the Land Cruiser range, being instead sold as the Lexus GX 470, with nearly identical body panels and a V8 engine.

The current Prado is based on Toyota's J150 platform. Previous models were based on the J70, J90 and J120 platforms. All models designated Prado feature front independent suspension, ladder frame and a two-speed transfer case.

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is available in GX, GXL and VX spec versions. The GX is the entry level model, while the VX is the more luxurious version. In most markets it is available with either a 4.0 L petrol V6 or a 3.0 L Diesel engine. In some European countries there are commercial van variants, based on the short-wheelbase chassis.
