Highest Mountain in Central Africa

Highest Mountain
in
Central Africa

Mount Mulanje

At 9,850 feet, Mount Mulanje is the highest mountain in Central Africa, rising dramatically from the rolling highlands below it.This great leviathan is split in two by the Fort Lister Gap, a wide channel eroded by the Sombani and Phalombe Rivers.Mulanje’s highest peak is Sapitwa and this colossal massif is surrounded by precipitous cliff faces, some towering over 3,000 feet high.Rivers run along lines of weakness in the rock and spectacular waterfalls cascade over sheer walls.The action of the water has eroded great clefts that run back towards the centre of the mountain.

A unique mountain climate

Mount Mulanje has its own climate, owing to its great height and it is often surrounded in a light mist, above which the highest peaks sometimes appear earning it the local name of ‘Island in the sky’.Heading up the mountain, you leave behind the familiar tropics of Malawi and enter a temperate zone more reminiscent of parts of Europe.
The scenery is absolutely stunning and ranges from majestic stands of Mulanje cedar, dense tropical rainforest and heather-clad plateaus speckled with flowers to the hugely dramatic crevasses, basins and gullies gouged out by fast flowing streams.More unusual vegetation includes the carnivorous Venus fly-trap. You may also see Whyte’s sunflowers tucked away in rocky shelters.
Animal life is fairly limited on Mount Mulanje although monkeys are common and klipspringer are often seen in the forest.There are large numbers of small mammals such as hares and voles, birds are also encouraged by the diversity of habitat.

Hugs For Love

So long as we love we serve;
So long as we are loved by others,
I would almost say that we are indispensable;
And no one is useless while they have a friend.

My Chopsticks Bra..

Chopsticks Bra was unveiled a few days ago by lingerie maker Triumph International Japan as a bid to promote the use of reusable chopsticks instead of the disposable ones. It is still a concept idea where the bra comes with a pair of chopsticks and creatively uses two bulging bowls of rice and miso soup as its cups. That way, the girls won’t forget to bring along their own chopsticks and not use the disposable ones.

Fashion Style in East Africa

Fashion Style in East Africa

The Anatomy of Kanga

Kanga is not just like any other rectangular piece of cloth, no matter how colourful it may be. It is an artifact of the Swahili culture and as such it should be designed with extreme care to appeal to its users. A poorly designed kanga, or one that fails to match the season doesn't deserve the name and the best it can be used for could be as a kitchen apron or a baby diaper.
Although the kanga design might differ slightly, a typical kanga in East Africa consists of a wider border (Swahili: pindo), the central motif (Swahili: mji), and the writing (Swahili: ujumbe or jina). You can see some of these features by looking at kanga pictures on this website.

So Last night I was reading my new Elle mag for the month of March and came across this new designer Max Osterweis, a 34-year-old screenwriter and film director from San Francisco whose clothing line is more inspired by his several trips he took to Kenya where his mother owns a house on Lamu island, Kenya.
His collection, Suno features cotton skirts, tops, fitted blazers, shorts, twisty headscarves, bikini, and shift dresses in vibrant prints made from East African kangas (printed cotton fabric) .He named his clothing line after his Mother and his designs cost from $95 for a bikini to about $595 for a tailored jacket or dress.
Many of the prints are printed with Swahili aphorisms that were originally worn to send messages to people such as “Watch your roosters, there’s a new hen in town.” or “The day a monkey is destined to die, all trees get slippery.”
