Ananda Temple is an important Buddhist pilgrimage destination that was built around 1105 under the rule of King Kyanzittha. There are four splendid statues of standing Lord Buddha facing from north to south. Each statue is adorned with a gold leaf. The architecture is noticeably Indian with high dome topped with a small pagoda. The terraces are decorated with terra cotta tiles which illustrate scenes from the Jataka. The temple experiences the highest number of pilgrim inflow during the festival of Pyahto in the month December to January.
