We have had the little red Starlet in our family for over 10 years and it has developed a bit of a personality. Day trips, holidays, commuting and general work horse it has been driven in a variety of ways and does the lot.
1.3 16v engine and weighing much less than a tonne the car is lively and responsive and typically gets around 40mpg. Never going to win any races, but there is enough power to give you confidence overtaking and it will certainly give heavier 1.6 cars (golf, focus) a run for their money. Upgrading to alloy wheels, improves handling massively.
Spec is not great, manual windows, no a/c basic but functional trim, 2 adults and a couple of kids - perfect, 4 adults is a squeeze. Rear seats fold back providing a useful boot space, surprising what you can fit into this little car.
If reliability is what you want, I think you would struggle to beat it. The only time it didn't start FIRST time was when we moved house - spooky. 16 years and 86,000 miles on there has been a replacement back box to the exhaust, a couple of new tyres, a new battery and a wiper blade. Brakes pads and a wheel barrings are due soon... that's why I called my Starlet as My Little Japanese Girl.
