A sport utility vehicle (SUV) is a generic marketing term for a vehicle similar to a station wagon, but built on a light-truck chassis. It is usually equipped with four-wheel drive for on- or off-road ability, and with some pretension or ability to be used as an off-road vehicle. Not all four-wheel-drive vehicles are termed as SUV. Some SUVs include the towing capacity of a pickup truck with the passenger-carrying space of a minivan or large sedan. Since SUVs are considered light trucks and often share the same platform with pick-up trucks, they were regulated less strictly than passenger cars under the two laws in the United States, the Energy Policy and Conservation Act for fuel economy, and the Clean Air Act for emissions.

STAR CAR (TOYOTA KLUGER V)

Toyota Kluger is a star car for the Japanese giant, teaming with the Prado to account for more than 40 per cent of total 2010 sales in our ‘Medium SUV’ segment. On its own the Kluger racked-up 13,117 sales last year – comfortably ahead of its nearest rival the Ford Territory (11,558).

A favorite with families who appreciate its clever, spacious interior, the Toyota Kluger measures-up thanks to its handy size, extensive equipment and value.

While not as large as its Prado sibling, the Kluger is one of the larger mid-size SUVs and Toyota’s stylists have taken advantage of those dimensions to deliver a smartly packaged, spacious and versatile AWD wagon ideally kitted for family life. Seven-seat or five-seat, the Kluger delivers big-time on interior features and convenience.

Safety is impressive too with a standard reversing camera, active front head restraints, seven airbags, stability and traction control, ABS anti-lock brakes and hill-start assist.

Toyota’s 2GR-FE, 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine has been around for a while but its star still shines brightly. High-tech and silky-smooth as it powers through the five-speed automatic transmission, this 60-degree V6 delivers the goods on-road and is tractable enough to get the job done in some tricky off-road scenarios.

Maximum power is 201kW at 6200rpm, peak torque of 337Nm arrives at 4700rpm and, despite weighing-in at almost 2.0-tonnes, Toyota Kluger accelerates from zero to 100km/h in under eight seconds.

Could Tony Stark's transparent phone from Iron Man 2 become real? It just took a major step forward thanks to researchers who have discovered a way to make batteries transparent.

Some existing phones, like the LG GD900, have transparent parts, but so far no one's created one with a completely see-through body. Part of the problem is that the electrodes in the typical lithium-ion batteries found in today's gadgets aren't transparent. Researchers at Stanford University confronted that issue by building a battery with electrodes that aren't completely solid, instead made up of a grid-like mesh. The thickness of the individual strands in the mesh is below the resolution of the human eye, making them virtually invisible.

The researchers were able to create the mesh by coating a silicon substrate with nanoscale trenches, each one just 35 microns wide. (A micron is one millionth of a meter.) Then they filled the trenches with the electrode material, a modified version of an existing gel electrolyte.

The result: a battery that you can see through. Besides being transparent, the battery is also flexible, meaning it could be built into things like wristwatch straps, and could make for an excellent pairing with already-flexible OLED screens.

Fancy Little Car

The funky little Copen is one of the most affordable small convertibles around and great fun to drive too. Unusually for a car this small it features a metal-folding roof rather than a fabric hood, which means it is relatively quiet on the move and well-insulated from cold weather. It's diminutive dimensions make it easy to drive and a doddle to park in town, but the downside is a cramped cabin and virtually no boot space when the roof is down. The original engine was a 0.7-litre turbo but this was replaced in early 2007 by a more powerful 1.3-litre which is also more economical.
