World's Smallest Humanoid Robot (2007)

panese toy maker Takara Tomy's world's smallest humanoid robot “i-Sobot” is displayed during the Toy Forum 2007 on January 23, 2007 in Tokyo, Japan. The 165mm height robot is able to walk, play the drums and keep its balance.

We won't beat around the bush: there's just no way that Takara Tomy's claim of "the world's smallestrobot" for its new Omnibot2007 i-SOBOT humanoid is even remotely true, but as far as fairly well-articulated humanoid biped toy bots that are about to be available for sale, we could see the 6.6-inch tall i-SOBOT taking that crown. Now that we've got the extravagant claims out of the way, there's a lot to love about the i-SOBOT, including an LCD-equipped remote for having the bot act out programmed motions, and voice control for dictating simple actions. The bot can play music, dance, and respond to applause and other user actions. The bot can also make its own punching and kicking sound effects, so we can imagine some entertaining robo-duels with a pair of these things. If that's not quite enough excitement for you, Takara Tomy is also prepping the Omnibot2007 i-SOBOT CAMVersion (pictured), which includes a camera that can beam pics to your PC or phone via WiFi, and whose head can swivel 60 degrees in each direction. The cam-free model should be out in July for 31,290 yen (about $258 US), while the CAMVersion bot will run you 41,790 yen ($344 US) when it debuts in October. Check a pic of the cheapo-version and his remote after the break.

Cherry Blossom

Cherry Blossom (Sakura)

The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture.
There are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan, most of which bloom for just a couple of days in spring. The Japanese celebrate that time of the year with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees.

On a Clear Night You Can See Stars in Japan

Stars Japan Night Sky If you have the opportunity to head out of the larger cities and into the more rural areas of Japan there is a good chance that you will be able to see the night sky in all of its glory.  But if you are in Tokyo, the city lights and the haze that engulfs the city in the hot and humid summer months can make seeing even the brightest star challenging at times.
If seeing the stars from Japan is on your itinerary then you will want to make a stop at The National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno or Tsukuba.
Kid’s will want to make a wish upon a star, and adults will be reminded once again of the vastness of the universe and be humbled by its mystery and simple beauty.  Did you know that the Japanese also sing a version of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star?  If you are taking kids with you it’s a great opportunity for both of you to expand your vocabulary – here are the words:
Japanese Lyrics Vocabulary
Kira-kira hikaru Kira-kira – shining
Yozora-no hoshi-yo hikaru – shine
Mabataki shitewa Minnna-o miteru yozora – night sky
Kira-kira hikaru hoshi – star
Yozorano hoshi-yo Mabataki – blink
Minna-o miteru – stars are watching everybody

JAPANESE TEA GARDEN

California is well known for its abundance of outdoor wonders, and the Japanese Tea Garden, along with other California gardens, are some of the best places to experience what is a high art form in Japan.
San Francisco is a town with a large Asian population, since it is filled with immigrants both old and new. The Chinese New Year is the largest of its kind outside of China, and it one of the biggest Events and Holidays held in the Bay Area.
The original Japanese Tea Garden was started at the 1894 World Fair Expo, which was held in San Francisco. This, and other structures like the Palace of the Legion of Honor were built as impressive structures designed to impress for the Exposition, but made such an impression that they were kept and maintained for the public to enjoy today.
The Japanese Tea Garden was originally only one acre and now covers five acres, and is a lush, beautiful wet walking garden, complete with ponds. This lovely, serene garden is now the oldest public Japanese Garden in the country.
The Japanese Tea Garden is complete with pines, lanterns, and statues, and has impressive Japanese-style landscaping, including a Zen garden. The Zen garden has a miniature mountain landscape with a waterfall and a small island. You can enjoy a cup of tea under a pagoda style pavilion and wander through a gift shop and purchase souvenirs and imported gifts. This is one of the most interesting parts of the Golden Gate Park to visit, but you will have to pay a small admission to visit.
A short drive south, in San Jose, is the Japanese Friendship Garden. In this spring there is a stunning exhibition of exquisite dolls and a seven-tier altar of the Japanese Royal Court called the O Hina Sama on display. A Japanese priest in Kyoto created these interesting dolls in the mid 16th century, and they are available for any visitor to enjoy when they visit the Japanese Friendship Garden in the spring months.
This delicate garden has a koi fishpond, and stunning jewel trees, and is filled with fragrant flowers like wisteria, and iris. The Japanese Friendship Garden is a great way to enjoy cultural events like koi fish feedings, Japanese calligraphy exhibitions, and interesting cultural displays. Best of all, admission to the garden is free, and it is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.
Only a short drive from San Jose are the Hakone Japanese Gardens. These are residential styles garden, and are available for scenic weddings, or it can be the picturesque setting for your next business meeting. There are interesting events you wonÂ't find at other California gardens like meditation, Yoga, and Tai Chi classes. There is no cost for admission at the Hakone Japanese Gardens, and you can enjoy authentic Japanese food and entertainment at the yearly Matsuri festival. This was also the historic setting for the 150th yearly celebration of the Treaty of Peace and Amity, held in 2004, and also the 2001 50th anniversary of the peace treaty between the United States and Japan.
The Hakone Japanese Gardens is an easy drive from two other impressive California gardens. If you visit Northern California, you will be able to enjoy Japanese culture up close as well as visit some of the most serene, beautiful gardens in the Western hemisphere.

 chaji

Traditional Japanese tea ceremony, chaji

The Japanese tea ceremony, also called the Way of Tea, is a Japanese cultural activity involving the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha, powdered green tea. InJapanese, it is called chanoyu (茶の湯) or chadō . The manner in which it is performed, or the art of its performance, is called otemae (お手前; お点前; 御手前?)Zen Buddhism was a primary influence in the development of the tea ceremony.
Tea gatherings are classified as ochakai (お茶会?) or chaji (茶事?)Chakai is a relatively simple course of hospitality that includes the service of confections, thin tea (薄茶 usucha?), and perhaps a light meal. Chaji is a more formal gathering, usually with a full-course meal (kaiseki), followed by confections, thick tea (濃茶 koicha?), and thin tea. A chaji will likely last at least four hours.

Pig Rodeo Rides Home The Bacon

Do you like mutton bustin', but wish it had less adorableness and more frightened squealing? Then maybe the Japanese pig rodeo is more your speed.
Grown men and women riding miniature livestock just doesn't have the same emotional pull as kids tackling walking pillows, but the Seiyo City Mikame Summer Festival held its 26th annual pig rodeo last week nonetheless. It was wild and muddy and I assume they served pork chops afterward. The important thing to note is that if an animal has four legs, humans will try to ride it and also probably gamble on that. And then when they are no longer useful to us, we will hit them cars. That is proper and just.
And when the pigs eventually take over the farm and the planet, just remember that I was nowhere near Japan last week. I always eat my bacon with respect!

About VVT - I

WHAT IS VVT-I?

VVT-i is a way to enhance performance, economy and emissions through control of the phasing, or timing, of an engine’s camshafts.

The valves that admit air-fuel mixture into the engine’s combustion chambers, and that open to allow the burned gasses to be pushed out as exhaust, are controlled by egg-shaped lobes on these camshafts, as you see on the image to the left.

The shape of those lobes, and their positioning on the shaft, determine a cam’s timing. In most cases, cam timing is fixed, and that means that it’s a compromise that provides optimal performance only at the speed at which the engine is likely to do most of its work.

But engines operate over a wide range of speeds, from an idle speed of about 600 rpm to a peak speed of more than 6,000 rpm. What if cam timing could be optimized over the engine’s entire operating range?

That’s precisely what VVT-i does.

Using a combination of electronics and hydraulics, VVT-i allows the intake cam to change phase, or timing, over a range of about 30 degrees. Changing the cam timing improves engine breathing at all rpm because the combustion chambers get an optimized volume of air/fuel mixture over a broader range of conditions. The result is more power, more torque, reduced emissions and enhanced fuel economy.

But what if we were able to change the phase of not just the intake cam, but also the exhaust cam? That’s exactly what Dual VVT-i does. By varying the phasing of the exhaust cam by about 30 degrees, we can vary the phasing of the intake cam by a wider range – by about 45 degrees. That means there’s a broader range over which we can open and close the intake valves. And that means we can extract still more power, torque, economy and better emissions.

The way this all works is that a computer controls an oil pump, which controls an oil pressure valve. This valve controls oil pressure in two chambers of the cam-sprocket housing. Based on the oil pressure on both sides of a cam vane inside the sprocket housing, seen here in the below image, the cam’s timing will advance or retard. More oil pressure on one side of the vane rotates the cam in one direction, more oil pressure on the other side of the vane rotates it the other way. This of course is independent of its basic operational rotation, which is provided by the cam’s chain drive.

The oil pressure that controls cam position is, in its turn, based on rpm, load and throttle input. It’s all quite nicely and efficiently managed; the system’s operation is seamless, and works as quickly as a computer can think. Applied to any of our engines, dual VVT-i results in 10-12% more horsepower and torque, and in improved efficiency.

The system also performs the function of exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) without the external hardware usually associated with this function. It works by leaving the intake valve open just a little, early on the piston’s exhaust stroke. This lets the piston blow a little exhaust gas back into the intake tract – which is basically what an external EGR system does. So there’s no need for a separate EGR system.

There’s another benefit, as well. Use of VVT-i basically trumps cylinder deactivation. Cylinder deactivation, of course, is a way to burn less fuel by allowing a V8 engine, for instance, to run on as few as four cylinders. But cylinder deactivation works best on unladen vehicle driven at small throttle openings. If you add a load or if you accelerate, the engine has to work harder, so it picks up cylinders again and becomes a full V8. The benefits of the technology disappear. Indeed, testing has shown that it’s hard to keep these engines in cylinder-deactivation mode. If you accelerate or add a load, they go to full V8 mode, and you lose the benefits of the system.

VVT-i, on the other hand, is active all the time. It provides its benefits all the time, loaded or unloaded, to optimize economy, emissions and horsepower. That’s why we’re so enthusiastic about it.

The Diet Building in Tokyo

The current Japanese constitution was promulgated in the year 1946 during the occupation by the Allied powers:

Legislature

The Japanese parliament is called the Diet. It consists of the House of Representatives (480 members) and the House of Councillors (242 members). The members of the Diet are elected by the Japanese people.

Executive

The cabinet is headed by the Prime Minister. The cabinet further consists of the ministers which are appointed by the prime minister and are usually members of the Diet. The prime minister is elected by the Diet.

Judiciary

The highest court is the Supreme Court. Other courts are district courts, high courts, family courts, and summary courts. Judges are appointed by the cabinet.

Elections

The minimum voting age is 20 years. Women received the right to vote in the new constitution. Elections for the House of Representatives are carried out every four years, and half of the House of Councillors is elected every three years. Beside the national elections there are prefectural and municipal elections.

The Emperor does not have any effective power but is only the symbol of the state.

Bridgestone!

Bridgestone Corporation (株式会社ブリヂストン Kabushiki-gaisha Burijisuton?) (TYO: 5108, OTCBB: BRDCY) is a multinational rubber conglomerate founded in 1931 by Shojiro Ishibashi (石橋正二郎 Ishibashi Shōjirō?) in the city of Kurume, Fukuoka, Japan. The name Bridgestone comes from a calque translation and transposition of ishibashi, meaning "stone bridge" in Japanese.

As of the end of 2005, production facilities belonging to the Bridgestone Group have increased to 141 spread throughout twenty-four nations of the world. In order to attain this level of globalization, the company established a new set of corporate policies in the year 2001. In continuation of this, the company's Brand Vision was also established in 2003.

A GlobalDream

Founder Shojiro Ishibashi

At Bridgestone, our dream is to become a truly global enterprise and to establish the Bridgestone brand as the undisputed world No. 1 brand in both name and substance. Across the globe, our entire team is focused on achieving this goal.

The roots of our dream date back to the establishment of Bridgestone Tire Co., Ltd. in 1931. Anticipating the future potential of tires for passenger cars and the international development of the business, founder Shojiro Ishibashi used an English translation of his surname for the name of the company. Even then he may indeed have been dreaming of the future of the Bridgestone Group.

As Japan's automobile industry grew, The Bridgestone Group expanded its business to become Japan's largest tire manufacturer. The company also actively expanded overseas, particularly in Asia. In 1988, the company acquired The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, a well respected global corporation with a venerable history of its own. This transformed Bridgestone into one of the world's largest tire and rubber companies and created a global team dedicated to serving customers worldwide with the highest level of quality, service and technology.

We hope this introduction to our company will provide you with a deeper understanding of the Bridgestone Group's strengths, as well as our future direction.

Ryu's car Review #3 - Nissan Teana

Overview:
Nissan, brought Teana as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) into the Indian market with an elegant look and a powerful engine in 2007. This luxurious Sedan is equipped with advanced technology and it attracts with its body design. The parts have been imported from Japan which makes the performance visibly good, but the availability of spares and the service quality is a concern.

Design and Features:
The exterior design of Nissan Teana is very stylish and attractive. This sedan is longer than most of the cars of its class. The eye-catchy exteriors include the front grill, the Bi-Xenon, high projected head lamps covered with blue colour lens, the bumper, the tail lights, and the wide design at the side window. Its exteriors make it look impressive and give it a wide look. The lines running through the front and the rear add to its dynamic look.
The interiors of Teana are also designed luxuriously and voluminously. The instrument panel, newly designed center console, the wood trimmed steering wheel, the front seat ventilation system, the good Air-Conditioning system, the music system with 6 audio speakers, the navigation system and the rear-seat head rests are worth mentioning and they add comfort to its passengers..

Driving abilities and comfort:
The driver’s seat is 8-way electronically powered and has lumbar support. So, the driver can enjoy a relaxing all-day ride. The front passenger’s seat is also 4-way electrically powered. The comfortable positions of the seats, the low NVH levels, urethane cushion material provide a good experience of ride for both the driver as well as the passengers.
Nissan Teana is capable of running smoothly and silently on any type of road. The front suspension, the multi-link suspension at the rear, the shock absorbers that are placed close to the tyres, and the springs enhance the stability on the worst roads as well as during cornering.
Teana offers a lot of safety features for its passengers. Some of which are the Anti-Lock braking system (ABS), the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Electronic Braking Distribution (EBD), air bags for the driver and the front seat passenger and the Collapsible Steering wheel.

Engines:
All New Nissan Teana is now powered with a 185Bhp engine produced at 6000RPM. The new VQ25DE petrol engine displaces 2496cc. This new engine can produces more power but consumes less fuel compared to previous version. It has a torque of 228Nm @ 4400 RPM. The new Multi-link Fuel Injection system makes the car frugal due to optimal power generation. The power is transferred to the rear wheels using the new XTronic CVT transmission system. This new transmission system transfers the power very smoothly smoother without any wastage. The 4-speed automatic transmission provides smooth and seamless gear shifts.
Nissan developed the New Platform D for the chassis to reduce the NVH levels. The Teana rides on independent struts of ball-joint type suspension in the front and multi-link type suspension in the rear. The new refined suspension and all new Nissan D platform make this car run in any condition with least noise inside the cabin.
The Teana comes standard with aluminum alloy wheels.

Competition:
Nissan Teana, available in two petrol variants the XL and the XV, and powered by the VQ series engines, this sedan stands in tough competition to the Skoda Superb and Toyota Camry.
The Teana is priced at 21.5lacs for the XL & 26lacs for the XV variant. It is offered in six different colors. At this price it becomes a very good overall package offering everything what you look for.
