Radio calisthenics

Radio calisthenics

refers to warm-up calisthenics popular in Japan, which are broadcast to music on public NHK radio early in the morning.

Rajio taisō were introduced to Japan in 1928 as a commemoration of the coronation of Emperor Hirohito. The idea for radio broadcastcalisthenics came from the US, where during the 1920s the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. sponsored 15-minute radio calisthenics in major cities in the US. Visiting employees of the Japanese postal insurance division brought samples of the exercises from the US back to Japan. The exercises were widely used to improve the health of Japanese soldiers both at home and abroad during the 1930s and 1940s. The exercises were introduced to several other pacific nations, including TaiwanHong Kong and Indonesia during Japan's colonization period.
After Japan's defeat in 1945, the broadcasts were banned by the occupying powers as being too militaristic in nature.
After several rewrites to the exercise routine, it was reintroduced by NHK radio in 1951 with the support of the education ministry, health ministry, the Japan Gymnastic Association and the Japan Recreation Association.

What Is the Meaning of Japanese Flowers?

What Is the Meaning of Japanese Flowers?thumbnail

Samurai warlords emblazoned flowered designs on their kimonos as a family crest. Men and women receive gifts of flowers on their anniversaries and flower language (hana kotoba) is used in all media: anime, movies and greeting cards. Speaking in flowers is central to Japanese culture.

Hydrangea

  • Hydrangeas were first discovered in Japan and are plentiful still during the rainy season (June to July). These flowers mean "pride" in Japan and are thought to provide peace and serenity to the recipient.

Iris

  • The giving of an iris flower symbolizes trust, an impenetrable friendship and faith. Being on the receiving end of a bunch of irises is a great honor in Japan.

Chrysanthemum

  • The word Chrysanthemum means "golden flower." The yellow chrysanthemum is prominent on the imperial family crest and conveys longevity of friendship and joy.

Lily

  • The meaning of a flower may change depending on its color. A person given a white lily is considered pure and chaste. In contrast, tossing someone an orange one denotes hatred and anger.

Ikebana

  • Flowers are very important to Japanese culture, so much so that flower arranging, or ikebana, is an art form. There are schools that teach intricate arranging according to style and symbolism.
