Sanno Matsuri

byThe Sanno Matsuri is one of the three most famous festivals of Tokyo, along with the Sanja Matsuri and the Kanda Matsuri. It takes place in mid June in even numbered years, alternating with the Kanda Matsuri which takes place in odd numbered years. The Sanno Festival extends over a week and has a few events, but most of them are rather small.

The festival parade passes by the skyscrapers of Marunouchi beside the Imperial Palace
The festival's main attraction is a parade that winds through almost 20 kilometers of central Tokyo over the course of nine hours on one of the festival days. The parade begins and ends at Hie Shrine, the shrine responsible for holding the festival. Hie Shrine enshrines the guardian deity of Tokyo. It is believed to predate the foundation of the city, and its kami (Shinto gods) have always been associated with the protection of the city.

When the Tokugawa shoguns began to rule the country from Edo (former name of Tokyo), the shrine also became associated with the Tokugawa family. During the period of their rule, the Edo Period (1603-1867), the festival became a celebration of the nation's new political center and its rulers.

In modern times, however, the parade has become much smaller in scale in order to avoid interfering with traffic and regular business. Many of the roads along the route get only partly closed, with busy traffic running alongside the festival parade. The procession consists of only some modest sized floats and about 500 people, who are dressed in colorful costumes. The most important part of the parade are three portable shrines (mikoshi), in which the kami (Shinto gods) are carried around the city.

At Hie Shrine, where the parade begins at eight in the morning, visitors can find a large straw ring standing in the middle of the shrine grounds. Walking through the ring is an act of purification in which visitors can take part. The parade gradually winds its way around the area, passing by the Yotsuya train station and Yasukuni Shrine. At around noon the parade arrives at the Tokyo Imperial Palace and stops for about half an hour while the mikoshi are involved in religious ceremonies. The chief priest enters the palace to offer prayers to the emperor and imperial family, which is a rare honor afforded to the festival.

The procession passes through Ginza
After a thirty minute pause, the parade continues past Tokyo Station before another pause of an hour is made at the small Nihonbashi Hie Shrine, where members of the procession are able to take a rest. Because the shrine is small, only a portion of the parade can enter, while the remaining people and floats head to a nearby park. After the parade resumes around 14:30, it passes near Nihonbashi Bridge, through the center of Ginza, past Shinbashi Station and ends at 17:00 back at Hie Shrine.

RAMEN for YOU!

Ramen is a noodle soup that was originally imported to Japan from China in the Meiji Period. In more recent decades, it has become a very popular dish in Japan, adapted to the Japanese taste. Ramen restaurants (ramen ya) number in the thousands, and instant ramen (invented in 1958) is popular both in and outside of Japan.
Ramen noodles are about as thin as spaghetti and are served in a soup that varies based on region, city and even specific vendor. Ramen's popularity stems in part from the fact that it is so inexpensive and widely available, making it an ideal option for budget travelers. In addition to freshly prepared ramen at ramen ya, supermarkets and convenience stores offer a large selection of instant ramen bowls.
Though ramen can be considered a one dish meal, gyoza are a common side dish offered at ramen ya. These Chinese style, pan fried dumplings are eaten with a soya and vinegar sauce. Shichimi (red chili mix) is usually available on the table to be added according to taste.
Ramen can be classified according to its soup base. The most popular ones are:
  • Shoyu Ramen: Brown, transparent, soya sauce based soup
  • Miso Ramen: Brown, non-transparent, miso based soup.
  • Shio Ramen: Transparent, salt based soup.
  • Tonkotsu Ramen: White, milky, pork based soup.
Ramen can also be named according to its ingredients. For example, chashumen is a ramen dish that features barbecued pork as toppings.

A TOKYO VISIT!!!

An overview of TOKYO`S Number 1 Tourist Attraction!!!

Tokyo Disneyland is a great theme park. It is laid out very similar to the park in California with much of the same rides. It caters pretty well to English speaking people, but all of the commentary on the rides is in Japanese. I went in late August and it wasn't too crowded. It has fast passes like the original Disneyland and you can cut your wait times drastically if you use them correctly. At night there was the Electric Dreamlights parade, which is amazing, there are hundreds of thousands of lights on all the floats. After watching the parade everyone moves over to the castle and watches some awesome fireworks. The park is very clean, much like you would expect from any Disneyland.

TOKYO DISNEY SEA
WELCOME

Tokyo DisneySea opened in September 2001, the first Disney theme park outside the United States not to use the "Magic Kingdom" design. DisneySea employed many of the concept designs that Walt Disney Imagineering had developed for a possible Long Beach, Calif. theme park, back when Long Beach and Anaheim were competing for Disney's second theme park in Southern California. Anaheim "won" that battle, and ended up with Disney's California Adventure.

CAVE

Mount Fuji's past eruptions and resulting lava flows have created multiple caves in the Fuji Five Lakeregion around the mountain's northern base. Today, three of these caves have been developed and opened to tourists to be explored without special equipment or guides. Take caution, however, as some of the caves have passages with low ceilings and steep steps that can be slippery when wet.

BAT CAVE

In the past, this cave was used as a natural storehouse and refrigerator, as the temperature inside stays at a relatively constant zero degrees Celsius throughout the year. The cave is furnished with a few shelves that store boxes of acorns and silkworm cocoons from the past. It is the most easily walkable and least exciting of the three caves.
ICE CAVE

Even during the summer, the temperature in the Ice Cave usually stays below freezing. Consequently the cave has been used since the early 1900s to store ice for use around the year. The circular walk through this cave is not very long, but contains passages with low ceilings and slippery stairs.

The Toyota Verossa was a sedan produced by the Toyota Motor Company for Japanese domestic market. The Verossa allowed Toyota to offer a car that complied with Japanese government regulations concerning external dimensions and engine displacement, and offered buyers a sedan that continued to offer a front engine rear drive platform, opposite the 2001-2006 Toyota Camry with very similar dimensions and front wheel drive. The advantage the Verossa offered over the Camry was the ability to offer all wheel drive, which the Camry couldn't do.

Ronin

A rōnin (浪人) or rounin was a samurai with no lord or master during the feudal period (1185–1868) of Japan. A samurai became masterless from the death or fall of his master, or after the loss of his master's favor or privilege.

According to the Bushido Shoshinshu (the Code of the Samurai), a samurai was supposed to commit oibara seppuku (also "hara kiri" – ritual suicide) upon the loss of his master. One who chose not to honor the code was “on his own” and was meant to suffer great shame. The undesirability of rōnin status was mainly a discrimination imposed by other samurai and by the daimyo (the feudal lords).
Like regular samurai, rōnin wore their two swords. Rōnin used a variety of other weapons too. Some rōnin, usually if they lacked money, would carry a bō (staff around 5 to 6 ft) or jō (smaller staff or walking stick around 3 to 5 ft) or they would use a yumi (bow). Most weapons would reflect the ryu or bujutsu school they came from if they were students.
During the Edo period, with the shogunate's rigid class system and laws, the number of rōnin greatly increased. Confiscation of fiefs during the rule of the third Tokugawa shogun Iemitsu resulted in an especially large increase of rōnin. During previous ages, samurai were easily able to move between masters and even between occupations. They would also marry between classes. However, during the Edo period, samurai were restricted, and were above all forbidden to become employed by another master without their previous master's permission. Also, low-level samurai, often poor and without choice, were forced to quit or escape their masters.
