Summary of the eRumor:  An eRumor with graphic photos written in Spanish about the hunting of pilot whales on the Danish Faroe Island as a right of passage.

The Truth:
The Office of Protected Resources, an US government agency responsible for protecting marine mammals and endangered marine life, have confirmed that long finned pilot whales are being hunted.  According to their website the pilot whale continues to be hunted and slaughtered on the Faroe Island which lies between Denmark and Iceland in the cold Atlantic waters but there is no danger of this species becoming extinct. The Office of Protected Resources falls under the Fisheries Department of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the Department of Commerce.
Long finned pilot whales are part of the dolphin family and like all marine mammals they are a protected species in the United States but classified by the NOAA agency as a "Low Risk Least Concern."  In the North Atlantic there are about about 750,000 long fin pilot whale in number.  Male pilot whales can measure up to 25 feet in length and weigh up to 5000 pounds.   The female of the species is generally smaller in length measuring about 19 feet and weighing in just short of 3000 pounds.   This is an anti-tropical (cooler water) species with a usual habitat of deep open ocean but they have been been spotted in coastal regions depending on season.
According to the Office of Protected Resources site, pilot whales are very social creatures and travel in large groups of up to 200 called pods.  Whalers benefited from this by driving and herding them together into tight groups.   The whales follow their food source in the waters consisting mostly of whiting fish, squid, and mackerel.
According to a 9/14/2003 BBC News story, residents of the Faroe have been hunting for pilot whales for centuries, giving them valuable food stocks for the winter.   The island has had a Norse settlement since the Viking age (800-900 AD.)
The shore-based hunters in the Faroe Islands of Denmark continue this practice and it is a community effort for storing whale meat and products for the winter. Pilot whale meat and blubber is considered by islanders to be an important part of their staple diet.  The whale meat is never sold, instead it is divided evenly to everyone who wants it.  What ever is left over is donated to the local hospital and senior citizens on the island.  There is very little of the whale that is actually wasted.  The islanders use the blubber for processing oil, the skin for ropes and lines, stomachs for floats, and the esophagus for shoes.  Pilot whales register high in mercury so pregnant mothers are warned against partaking in the meat.
As for a ceremony of rite of passage, other than the traditional confirmation or getting married we found no evidence of a required whale hunt for the young men on this island. The communal processing is open to anyone on the island who regardless of age or gender.

Healthiest Cities In The World

Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland. Looks very beautiful and clean.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland is one of the least polluted countries in the world. Iceland has an overall low rate of disease. The country’s TB prevalence is 2.2 per 100,000 citizens and they have seen no cases of H1N1 or avian flu. Iceland also has a high density of physicians, with 3.62 per 1,000 citizens.
Swimming is a popular sport in Iceland. Swimming has been included in Icelandic school curriculums for over 60 years and every Icelandic resident is required to learn swimming. The wealth of geothermal heat makes Iceland a great place to swim. Open air heated swimming pools are located all over the country and are open year round. Other outdoor sports like hiking and sailing are also popular in Reykjavik.Reykjavik and other cities in Iceland have a very high car ownership rate per capita at about 522 vehicles per 1,000 residents, but they are not severely affected by congestion and have a very low air pollution rate.

  • Female mice can give birth when they are two months old and are able to have babies 6 to 10 times per year.
  • Mice have to build their homes near sources of food because they like to eat 15 to 20 times per day.
  • Mice can live in a lab for up to two years, but usually only live for about 5 months in the wild, mostly because of predators, such as cats, snakes and foxes.
  • Mice are good jumpers, climbers and swimmers.
  • House mice, like other rodents, do not vomit.

DIETDeer mice eat seeds, small fruits and berries, beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, leafhoppers, and an underground fungus. They prefer to eat insects when they can find them.
HABITAT
The deer mouse makes its home outdoors in hollow tree logs or piles of garbage. They are nocturnal, so they sleep in their nests during the day. They also use their nests to raise their young and to protect them against harsh weather. When a deer mouse does come indoors, it prefers quiet places, such as attics.
IMPACT
Deer mice can spread the potentially fatal Hantavirus. The virus can be spread by touching infected mice or by breathing in the fumes released in their urine.
PREVENTION
  • Mice eat 15-20 times a day, so keep your homes clean and do not leave food out.
  • Be sure to empty kitchen and household garbage cans frequently.
  • Make sure that your home and storage areas are clean and dry.
  • Make sure that you clean your sheds, crawlspaces, and garbage cans often.
  • Close up any small holes and cracks they can come in through.

ALL ABOUT SPORTS

Cricket Game

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players on a field, at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. One team bats, trying to score as many runs as possible while the other team bowls and fields, trying to dismiss the batsmen and thus limit the runs scored by the batting team. A run is scored by the striking batsman hitting the ball with his bat, running to the opposite end of the pitch and touching the crease there without being dismissed. The teams switch between batting and fielding at the end of an innings.
In professional cricket the length of a game ranges from 20 overs of six bowling deliveries per side to Test cricket played over five days. The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) with additional Standard Playing Conditions for Test matches and One Day Internationals.
Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world behind association football, according to the website MostPopularSports.com. Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, it had developed into the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19th century the first international matches were being held. The ICC, the game's governing body, has ten full members. The game is played particularly in Australasia, the Indian subcontinent, the West Indies, Southern Africa and England.

Most Expensive Place

Zurich, Switzerland

February 15th, 2012
Posted by:

Zurich has overtaken Tokyo to rank as the world’s most expensive city for the first time in 20 years, according to the  Economist Intelligence Unit's latest Worldwide Cost of Living Survey.  The Swiss city was joined in the top five by Geneva, which rose to third place to tie with Osaka.
Whilst Switzerland has long been home to some of the priciest places to live, its upswing in the rankings can be attributed to the heavy investment in the Swiss franc, which is seen as a relatively safe currency outside of the embattled Eurozone, according to the report. Local price inflation in Switzerland has been low, but the report explained that "local inflation in mature markets always has far less influence on the relative cost of living than the currency movements of the countries in question."
Cities in the Asia-Pacific make up half of the top ten—in addition to Tokyo and Osaka, Sydney and Melbourne placed seventh and eighth, respectively, followed by Singapore. Seoul climbed 13 places over the last year to 27th place, and Chinese cities are also increasingly expensive, with Shanghai surpassing New York by two places to rank 42nd.

Hong Kong, which has long been noted as an expensive place to live, is surprisingly ranked at 22, much lower than its third-placed position a decade ago.  The report attributed this to Hong Kong’s currency peg to the weak U.S. dollar, enabling price increases to not be compounded by exchange rate appreciation.

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.[1][2] Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) if their BMI is between 25 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2.[3]
Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart diseasetype 2 diabetesobstructive sleep apnea, certain types ofcancer, and osteoarthritis.[2] Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive food energy intake, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility, although a few cases are caused primarily by genesendocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness. Evidence to support the view that some obese people eat little yet gain weight due to a slow metabolism is limited; on average obese people have a greater energy expenditure than their thin counterparts due to the energy required to maintain an increased body mass.[4][5]
Dieting and physical exercise are the mainstays of treatment for obesity. Moreover, it is important to improve diet quality by reducing the consumption of energy-dense foods such as those high in fat and sugars, and by increasing the intake of dietary fiber. To supplement this, or in case of failure, anti-obesity drugs may be taken to reduce appetite or inhibit fat absorption. In severe cases, surgery is performed or an intragastric balloon is placed to reduce stomach volume and/or bowel length, leading to earlier satiation and reduced ability to absorb nutrients from food.[6][7]
