Signs of a Bad Network Interface Card

A Network Interface Card, or NIC for short, is a type of card in a computer that allows the computer to connect to the Internet network. When the card is bad, the network connection has problems and the computer will ultimately not connect at all. There are signs to tell when the NIC is bad so that it can be replaced before the computer is unable to connect at all.

Check the Cable Box

  • Before assuming the problem with the network is related to the Network Interface Card, check the cable box. More problems are related to problems with the Internet service rather than the NIC. If the network is wireless, check the router as well, since the problem might be a bad signal from the router.

Reboot the Computer

  • When the problem is the NIC, rebooting the computer will not have an effect and the Internet should not work. If the Internet works after rebooting, the problem is with the synchronization between the network and the computer rather than the NIC card.

Internet Does Not Work

  • When the Internet does not work after the modem is replaced or repaired, the router is working properly and the computer reboots, the problem is most likely a faulty NIC. In this case, replace the Interface Card with one that is the same make and model to ensure it works with the computer. Take it to the shop if the NIC is not working to prevent causing damage.
