By the 2060s, robotics technology has become extremely advanced, including cybernetics. World opinion begins to turn against robotics, leading to the U.N. declaring a unilateral ban on further research in 2067. Japan, being home to robotics pioneer Daiwa Heavy Industries, strongly protests this ban, but is unable to prevent its passage. In protest, Japan withdraws from international politics. All foreigners aredeported, and further immigration is prohibited. In addition, the R.A.C.E. network is constructed — 270 off-shore installations that cover Japan with an energy field, nullifying all communication with the outside world and making satellite surveillance impossible. Trade and diplomacy continues, but Japan vanishes from the world scene.
Ten years later, the United States Navy special warfare unit "SWORD" is trying to trap a Japanese informant for Daiwa in Colorado. The instigator, Saito, escapes by cutting off his own leg. Analysis shows the leg is made of bio-metal. SWORD suspects that Japan has concealed extensive development of banned technologies. They embark on an unapproved scheme to infiltrate Japan and to find out the frequency of the R.A.C.E. network, enabling SWORD to gather intelligence on the country. Although the agents successfully enter Japan, they are detected by security forces before they can transmit their data. Vexille is the sole SWORD agent to evade capture, and only her lover Leon survives to be taken to Daiwa's headquarters. Vexille awakens to find Tokyo is now a shanty town ruled by Daiwa. A small resistance movement opposes the company, and uses Vexille's transmitter to successfully transmit the distortion frequency.
Maria, the head of the resistance, details the 10 years of secrecy while SWORD studies the Japan in shocked horror — the islands are a lifeless wasteland. In 2067, an unknown disease struck the Japan and was countered by an experimental vaccine. Actually, the disease was created by Daiwa and the "vaccine" was used as an excuse for Daiwa to begin testing experimental nanotechnology. Every Japanese citizen was converted into a form of synthetic life. But there were unforeseen side effects; the conversion was imperfect, resulting in the infected humans losing their free will and becoming just lifelike machines. Some of the nanotech went amok, creating the "Jags", giant whirling constructs of semisentient metal that prowl the wilderness. The Jags destroyed all of Japan, save Tokyo which is protected by an inedible wall of ceramic.
The Resistance plans to draw the Jags along a service bridge to Daiwa's corporate headquarters, which now stands in the middle of Tokyo Bay. Vexille volunteers her assistance (and that of her flight-capable armor). However, though Vexille and Maria succeed in drawing the Jags to the end of the service bridge, the bridge has been detached from the headquarters, the Jags fall into the sea, and Vexille and Maria are captured. They are taken to Kisaragi, the master of Daiwa, who boasts that his research is nearly complete. And as he needs more test subjects, he is going to invade America. Vexille attacks him with a hidden knife, revealing that his blood is still human — he has not used the process himself. Saito, then strangles him. The town council forces the ceramic gates open, destroying Tokyo and enabling the Jags to enter Daiwa's headquarters. Kisaragi, having somehow survived, shoots Saito and escapes with his research. The underling then releases Vexille and Maria before succumbing to his wounds.
Vexille pursues Kisaragi while Maria frees Leon, who shows concern for Vexille, angering Maria. Thus when Vexille prevents Kisaragi's escape in a helicopter, Maria grabs him and holds them together as a Jag devours them. Vexille and Leon are rescued by a SWORD helicopter just as Daiwa headquarters collapses into the bay, along with every Jag in Japan. As Vexille and Leon are flown from a now completely lifeless Japan, Vexille comments that humanity's spirit can never be taken away.

Hunter × Hunter (ハンター×ハンター Hantā Hantā), is a Japanese manga series
written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi. The story focuses on a young boy named Gon, who discovers that his father, whom he was told was dead, is actually alive and well. He learns that his father, Ging, is a legendary Hunter, an individual who has proven themselves an elite member of humanity and who specializes in finding rare creatures, secret treasures, and other individuals. Despite Ging having left his son with his relatives in order to pursue his own dreams, Gon becomes determined to follow in his father's footsteps, pass the rigorous Hunter Examination, and eventually find his father to become a Hunter in his own right. The original inspiration for the manga came from Togashi's own collecting hobby.
Hunter × Hunter began its manga serialization on March 3, 1998 in the Shueisha magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. As of August 2011, its 310 chapters have been published in 29 tankōbon (chapter collections) in Japan. However, the manga has frequently gone on hiatus since 2006. Hunter × Hunter was translated into English and released in North America by Viz Media beginning in April 2005. In 1999, the manga series was adapted into a 62-episode anime series produced by Nippon Animation and directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi. The anime premiered on Japan's Fuji TV and Animax. Three separate original video animations (OVAs) totaling 30 episodes were subsequently produced by Nippon Animation and released in Japan from 2002 to 2004. The television series has been licensed and released in North America by Viz, and it aired on the Funimation Channel starting in 2009. A second anime television series by Madhouse began airing on Nippon Television in October 2011. There are also numerous audio albums, video games, musicals, and other media based on Hunter × Hunter.

Japan’s exports grew in September for a second straight month, reflecting the nation’s
gradual recovery from March’s earthquake and tsunami as auto production returns to pre-disaster levels.
Exports rose 2.4% from a year earlier to 5.98 trillion yen, pushing Japan back into a trade surplus after registering a deficit in August, the finance ministry said.
The gain beat market expectations for a 1.0% expansion and came after a 2.8% rise in exports in the previous month.
However, imports soared 12.1% to 5.68 trillion yen, rising for the 21st straight month, mainly due to higher energy prices.
It left a trade surplus of 300.4 billion yen, also bigger than market expectations for 199.5 billion yen.
But the trade surplus was 61.2% lower than the level seen last year, reflecting the high cost of energy as Japan ramps up imports of fossil fuels to make up for the shortfall in power supply, with many of the country’s nuclear plants still offline in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.
The rebound in exports showed that Japan was “on the way to a moderate recovery,” said Yasunari Ueno, chief market economist at Mizuho Securities.
Leading the recovery, auto exports rose 4.9% while exports of auto parts jumped 11.5%, the finance ministry said.
Leading automaker Toyota Motor’s global production recovered to pre-tsunami levels in September, two months earlier than forecast, local media said, before Thai floods forced the temporary shutdown of factories there.
Japanese shipments of semiconductors and electronics parts were still down 9% from the previous year, according to the ministry data.
Looking ahead, worries remain for Japan Inc. after the yen reached a new record against the dollar Friday.
Major foreign markets such as the United States and Europe tend to stagnate ahead of the Christmas sales season, also pressuring exporters.
The Cabinet Office last week downgraded its view of the economy for the first time in six months as an overseas slowdown weighed on output and exports, while a strong yen further clouded the outlook.
In its monthly report for October, it lowered its assessment of exports, industrial production and personal consumption while warning that the effects of deflation still pose a threat.
For the April-September fiscal half year, Japan’s exports fell 3.8% on year, the first drop in four halves, mainly on auto, semiconductor and plastic exports that were hit hard by the March disasters.
Imports for the same period rose 12.1% on soaring energy costs, leaving Japan in a trade deficit for the period.
