Disabling the Microsoft Windows XP System Restore.

Computer malware can hide in the System Restore area, making them difficult to delete and detect. Even with an antivirus protection program on the computer, it may be necessary to disable the System Restore temporarily and then run the antivirus in Windows Safe Mode. Disabling the System Restore can also help conserve hard disk drive space for anyone who needs more disk space.

Disabling the System Restore feature should only be a troubleshooting step and not a solution. We still recommend keeping the System Restore enabled in case you encounter problems down the road. After disabling the System Restore be sure to re-enable it later.

Disabling the System Restore in Windows XP
  1. In Windows XP, click Start
  2. Click Programs, Accessories, and then Tools
  3. Within the System Restore window, click "System Restore Settings" link.
  4. In the System Properties window, check the "Turn off System Restore" box.
  5. Click Apply and then Ok.

If you encounter problems while disabling the System Restore, reboot the computer into Safe Mode and repeat the above steps.

If you're disabling the System Restore to help verify no hidden viruses or malware are installed on the computer, after the above steps have been completed, reboot the computer into Safe Mode and run your antivirus program in Safe Mode.
